I have a reasonably long maritime and shipping experience, it commenced from
a seagoing carrier and now it’s progressing into legal aspects as well.
I began my seagoing carrier in 1974 as a deck officer in Singapore registered
vessels and later promoted to a junior officer. In 1994, I have successfully
completed the certificate of competency as a master mariner (deck officer class
one) in Singapore Polytechnic, afterwards I took command of petroleum tankers
and gain about two years of command experience. My overall seagoing
experience of about 20 years includes vessels of general and bulk cargo,
containers, and petroleum products tankers. In 1997, I commenced working on
shore base in the capacity of a shipping company executive or port captain,
followed by as a marine surveyor and later to senior management positions . In
the year 2003, I established JMC NAUTICAL PTE. LTD. to conduct my own
marine consultancy work where I remain as the director and the consultant to this
date. As a ship’s captain I was in command and among other things was
responsible for navigation of the vessel in port, coastal waters and international waters, cargo operations and stability of the vessel, security and antipiracy techniques and on board management of the ship’s crew and officers.
As a marine consultant work I have undertaken include inspections of ships, cargo stowage and assessment of seaworthiness for the purpose of marine insurance cover, condition and damage surveying for ships and cargo for Protection and Indemnity Clubs (P& I clubs), ship owners and charters, verification of cost on behalf of owner or charter during repairs, valuation of ships, bunker petroleum quantity survey and disputes and expert witness in international arbitration.
